TRICARE Childbirth Benefits (2025)

In October 2021, TRICARE launched the Childbirth Support Demonstration to include doula benefits for beneficiaries. Then in April of 2024 TRICARE announced they were phasing out several aspects of the program as well as realigning doula benefits and the doula pay scale. Luckily, I was able to make the switch to Phase 2 and I am proud to continue serving fellow military dependents and active duty members through TRICARE!

What services does The Birth Chronicles provide through TRICARE?

Currently TRICARE covers six hours of visits with a certified labor doula, and one continuous labor event. This means I am able to provide private in person childbirth education classes, prenatal visits, postpartum visits, and labor support.

How much do client’s pay for doula services?

You don’t pay anything for your TRICARE doula benefits! In order for you to work with me, we go over my contract together and after signing I collect your full name, date of birth, and social security number for insurance purposes and I submit all invoices to TRICARE directly.

How do I know if I am eligible for doula services?

To qualify for doula services through TRICARE, you must:

  • Be enrolled in TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select

  • Be at least 20 weeks pregnant

  • See a TRICARE-authorized provider for your birth event

  • You can’t plan to give birth in a military hospital or clinic as part of the CBSD (or plan to give birth at home in the state of Nebraska)

  • Use a TRICARE approved certified doula.

  • If you’re enrolled in TRICARE Prime, you’ll need a referral from your primary care physician. Point-of-service charges may apply without the referral.

What do I need to do to work with Kayla?

In order to work with me, I currently require all clients to be on the TRICARE Prime, Select, or Active Duty plan. You also cannot have OHI (other health insurance) or Medicaid. In order to receive services if you are Active Duty or Prime, you must get a referral from your provider between 20-34 weeks of pregnancy and be using a TRICARE authorized provider, such as the Women’s Clinic or FMR. If you are Select you must be receiving prenatal care and delivering with a TRICARE authorized provider in our area.

Do I need to use all of my benefits?

You do not need to utilize all of your benefits to receive services! If you would only like childbirth education, we can easily do that. If you would like my labor doula package (one prenatal visit, birth support, one postpartum visit), that works for me. If you would only like a prenatal or postpartum visit, we can work that out as well! The maximum amount of support I can give is six total hours of visits/classes and one continuous birth event per pregnancy.
